I’ve written a series of Songs about the life of Saint Patrick, Irelands patron saint. A musical of sorts that we never got off the ground.

There are several different versions of this prayer, which is alleged to be the invocation that led Patrick and his party safely to the confrontation with the Druids at Tara. It’s Irish name, the Deer’s Cry, is based on the legend that Patrick and his eight companions were miraculously turned into deer to be able to pass unnoticed by the king’s guards sent to intercept them.

Father you sent your servant here
to bring your word this Island dear
To climb the mountain high above
and share with those below your love

All through the night all through the day
your servant here to you will pray
With all my heart and all my soul
Bless this land a thousand fold

Faeth Fiadha – hear my plea
Faeth Fiadha – set them free
Faeth Fiadha – all that I am
Faeth Fiadha – for the Lamb

Christ be before me, Christ behind
here within my heart and mind
Christ above me, Christ below
please be with me, where I go

Christ beneath me, Christ above
in all the hearts of those I love
Christ in quiet, oh Christ in danger,
in the mouth of friend and stranger

Faeth Fiadha – hear my plea
Faeth Fiadha – set them free
Faeth Fiadha – all that I am
Faeth Fiadha – for the Lamb
